The Dining Nook

This is where the vision started, what I saw in my head from the very beginning. We’ve wanted to build for ourselves for years and that’s exactly what it took to get to this point and I always knew I wanted a dining nook of floor to ceiling windows that would overlook our land.

One night when Craig and I stayed up late drawing our floor plan, we started with this space and drew the rest of the home around it. We planned for it to face mostly west on the property, where the sun sets and I am so glad we did. The sunsets here are SO magical! We can sit here as a family and enjoy a wonderful dinner with a view, then walk on the back patio to soak in the sunset.

Craig really wanted black windows in this house and we have zero regrets with them, we kept our designs in the interior very classic and minimalist so that the windows didn’t make the space too “busy”. Many people feel that black windows with grills are too busy and I’ll admit that I was a little nervous, it didn’t take long to fall in love with them though. When going for black windows you can always opt for the interior to be white or you can opt for less grills. I ran into that decision when I changed the kitchen window to the arched one I wanted, this is where I customized how many grills it would have.

We also made sure to have the front door inline with this space so that when you enter the home you see the view beyond the dining nook. Everything about this home was from a feeling I wanted to emulate in the space, a feeling of being surrounded by nature but also having the comforts of a cozy home. This property is all mature pine trees that frame gorgeous views of surrounding farmlands and Georgian bay, I really wanted to be able to see as much of that as possible while inside the home.

Tongue & groove ceilings by Metrie are one of my favourite things to incorporate into our designs, we continued it in the dining nook and hung a beautiful beaded chandelier by Hinkley in there, it makes such a lovely statement! We used Metrie for our t & g at our last house too and I always love it, it’s easy to install and gives a great finished look.

The table in this space was actually a second hand find, Craig and the Bespoke Fine Cabinetry team prepped it and refinished it together and it turned out so well! You can save so much money and find such great quality when shopping second hand, it just needs some TLC.
